Here is some info for you…
Q: Where are we sending the hair? What is Zichron Menachem?
A: Zichron Menachem provides support for any young person in Israel under the age of 25 living with cancer, as well as their parents and siblings. Families of all religions and backgrounds turn to Zichron Menachem for the help they need most: information, a second opinion, a wig, counseling for all the members of the family, afterschool care and activities for siblings, or an outing or social event to take a break from the routine of medical appointments.
Q: What is the purpose of hair donation?
A: One of the first questions that kids with cancer ask is, “Will I lose my hair?” Zichron Menachem collects hair from donors around the world to make much-needed wigs for children who have lost their hair during treatment. Your generosity helps make these children feel like themselves again. Zichron Menachem has made thousands of wigs for children and young adults who are custom-fitted for their specific needs.
Q: How can I prepare for cutting my hair this summer?
- Hair must be a minimum of 12” long.
- Curly hair can be blow-dried straight to measure the minimum length.
- Your hair may be colored, but bleached hair cannot be accepted.
- No dreadlocks, weaves or wigs.
If you think you are interested in participating in the hair donation, please click this link to sign up.
NOTE: You can still choose to back out at any point!! There is no full commitment to signing up here and now.
NOTE: A consent form will be emailed at a later date.
Q: What will happen on the day of the hair chop at camp?
A: We will do this twice this summer: once in first session and once in second session, so that anyone interested – chanich/a (camper) or tzevet (staff) – will have the opportunity to be a part of this miztvah.
A hairdresser will come to camp to cut your hair. Your hair must be clean and dry, with no styling products. Before cutting your hair, the hairdresser will put your hair into a ponytail or braid for the donation. After the ponytail or braid is cut, you will get a “real” haircut!
Q: What if I don’t want to cut my hair or don’t have enough hair to donate?
No worries and no pressure. For those who are not able or interested in cutting their hair for this event, we will not pressure you at all!
In addition to the “main event”, camp will be filled with ruach and chesed activities to help support Zichron Menachem and to promote the summer theme of “L’taken Olam”. We do fully expect you to encourage your bunkmates and participate in the other chesed peulot going on!
